Roll to Record : Multi-Camera Interviews with High-Profile Guests Using Apollo

Roll to Record : Multi-Camera Interviews with High-Profile Guests Using Apollo

Clients expect the highest level of production quality for multi-camera interviews with high-profile guests. It’s important to have the right experience, equipment, and camera configurations to streamline the entire multi-camera production, from set-up and recording to delivery. Many projects also have budget or time constraints that can add additional post-production challenges.

At a recent shoot, Stephen Greaves and I (Dan Martland) put our skills to work and are proud to show the results.

The commission was to shoot and technically produce several multi-camera, sit-down interviews for “The Heat”, a live 30-minute show  (on this occasion, an “as-live show”) airing on CGTN (formerly CCTV).

One key to achieving the highest level of production quality comes down to the videographers’ equipment. We both own Sony PMW-F5s and mostly operate with Canon Cn7 lenses. For this production, we gave the interview shots as much depth as possible. Knowing the setting for the interviews in advance helped us decide what lenses to use. Ultimately, we shot this production with fast prime and zoom lenses. Shooting wide open with fast primes achieved that shallow depth of field look.

Apollo AV Align - The Solution to Audio / Video Sync Problems

Apollo and Apollo Option for the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ include a very important feature: Audio/Video Align. In Apollo Mode, AV Align corrects for when Audio is out of sync with the Video and aligns multiple cameras.

All cameras have a delay (latency) from when the light hits the sensor to when the video comes out the HD-SDI or HDMI outputs. Some cameras have a much longer delay than others. Some DSLR’s have a four-frame delay, while more professional cameras typically have a much shorter delay. These varying amounts of delay among the cameras cause a problem when switching from one camera to another.

For example: consider four cameras pointed to a fashion runway.

As the model is walking down the runway, if one switches to a camera with a longer internal delay, then the model will appear to jump back to a previous position, which is, of course, unacceptable.

Also, even if one is using four of the same camera, set up exactly the same, except that one has a wireless transmission system or audio embedder in the signal path, then this one camera’s signal will be delayed, compared to the others.

It is fairly common for all cameras not to be Genlocked. Many cameras do not even have Genlock capabilities. It is fine to have Genlocked cameras and still use AV Align. AV Align solves the problem when Genlock is not available. (Please note that for some situations, either Genlock or even Pixel-Lock, is required for the shoot, such as when shooting professional 3D.)

The beauty of the Apollo and Apollo Option is the time it saves in Post! It does not take long for the savings in Post to pay for the Apollo or Apollo Option.

  • All clips start on precisely the same frame.
  • The timecodes match precisely.
  • The Audio and Video are precisely aligned.
  • Each file has matching filenames.

Setting up AV Align is quick and easy. It takes less than 2 minutes at the start of the day,
and then can save hours in post.  To set up AV Align:

  1. First, record a short clip with a clapper or just clap your hands, in front of all four cameras.

  2. Switch to playback and touch AV Align in the top menu.

  3. Using the scrubbing tools, or Frame Advance, find the point where the clapper or your hands touch for the first camera. Then touch Align Video button.

  4. Using the Frame Advance tools, find where the audio peaks, watching the audio level meters. Then touch the Align Audio Button.

  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for all cameras, then touch Done.

Now all of your audio and video are aligned. Once you become familiar with AV Align, you will be able to set it up in around one minute.

If you turn off the Odyssey or Apollo, it will remain in sync when you use it again, provided you use the same camera setup. If you change your camera setup or swap cables, you should perform AV Align again. If you wish to turn AV Align off or back on, you may do so in the Setup Menu.

What Convergent has done with Titan shows the way to capturing all camera angles at once // Red Shark News

What Convergent has done with Titan shows the way to capturing all camera angles at once // Red Shark News

Convergent technology has a very distinctive business strategy that becomes clearer with every passing month. Their Odyssey range of recorder/monitors has been around since early 2013, and when they appeared, we thought they were incredibly significant.

With hindsight, we were right, but not necessarily for the right reasons. It was certainly important to note that they had high quality OLED screens. This was a step beyond anything that their competitors had done then or since. They build quality was impressive. And it was pretty obvious from the price that there was something special inside.

It seems clear now that the processing power of the Odyssey range was and still is huge. The reason we know this is because three and a half years after the range was first released, we’re still seeing software releases that significantly improve the functionality of the devices.

When All Else Fails, Apollo Doesn't

ThingsGoWrongSometimes things go wrong.
Most don’t like to talk about it, but smart design means planning for failures.
Even someone else’s.

Apollo can record up to four HD video inputs simultaneously, as well as a fifth channel of a Live-Switch between the four inputs or a Quad-Split view showing them all together.  Placing all five recordings in one device is a great convenience, but it also means that Convergent Design had to design Apollo’s recording to be bulletproof.  Failure could be catastrophic and was not an option.

New Firmware adds FS5 Raw recording, A/V Align and other features // News Shooter

New Firmware adds FS5 Raw recording, A/V Align and other features // News Shooter

Convergent Design has just released a major firmware update for the Odyssey 7Q/7Q+ 4K recorder and Apollo recorder/switcher. This is the thirteenth firmware update since the original Odyssey 7Q was announced and its good to see a company continually updating their products like this. The previous firmware updates weren’t just simple bug fixes – they added a lot of functionality and features over time. The latest firmware, previously shown at NAB 2016, follows this trend and provides a host of great new additions.

If you have the optional Odyssey Raw bundle you can now record from the Sony FS5 in 4K or 2K Raw in CinemaDNG, or take the Raw signal from the camera and convert and record it in Apple ProRes (although the FS5 must be set to Picture Profile Slog2 with Standard Gamma for this to work). The 4K FS Raw to 4K CinemaDNG is available at frame rates up to 60p. There is also the option to record short 4K FS Raw bursts in CinemaDNG at frame rates of 100 or 120fps. If you are shooting 2K FS Raw to 2K CinemaDNG you can get higher frame rates up to 240fps.

Convergent Design: $1,000 Price Drop on Apollo // Cinema5D

About two months ago, Convergent Design announced a significant price drop on their popular Odyssey 7Q+ recorder. A couple of weeks later and it seems it is time to administer the same treatment to their flagship product, the Apollo.

Just another price drop

We live in exciting times! Over the last few months, the ability to record with the full potential of your given camera with the help of an external recorder became much more accessible thanks to some generous price drops. Just a month ago, Atomos announced a $500 drop on their Shogun lineup of monitors/recorders. Two weeks earlier, Convergent Design announced a similar price reduction for their Odyssey 7Q+ monitor / recorder. Now, they’ve done it again: for a limited time (until Midnight MST April 30, 2016 to be precise) they are offering a $1,000 saving on their flagship recorder, the Apollo.
